Your account

An email address, and an eight-digit code mailed to it. There is no password and no sign-up: the same address always opens the same archive.

Anyone who can read your mail can ask for a code, so the mailbox is the lock. An account is one person's.

What you write stays yours

You own your entries and your photographs. Byhand stores them, shows them back to you, and hands them over whenever you ask.

We claim no other right to them. They are never published, sold, or shown to another person, and Byhand does not use them to train a model.

We do use what is here to run and improve Byhand — to find faults, to see what gets used and what does not, and to decide what to build next. That is the service developing; it is not publication, sale, or training.

The one exception is the assistant, and only if you use it: a question you send it leaves Byhand to be answered, and the provider that answers may keep what you sent. Who that is, and what they keep, is under Who else ever sees it.

What Byhand keeps

Your email address.

What you write: each entry with its date, time, and timezone; the books and activities you attach entries to; the stickers you press onto them.

The photographs you add, and the cover of a book you add from a catalogue.

Your birth details, if you enter them for the dressing readings. That is optional, and you can erase it.

An export archive, from when you ask for one until you have collected it.

A daily count of assistant usage and its cost, which is what enforces the daily limit.

Preferences, in cookies: your session, the interface language, light or dark, and the dictation settings.

To answer you the assistant reads your own journal, and your question, the recent conversation, and whatever it read from your entries are sent through our server to an outside company that runs the model. What that company may keep is under Who else ever sees it.

Who else ever sees it

Hosting. The servers, the database, and the file storage belong to the companies we rent them from. They hold the data to run Byhand and for nothing else.

Mail. Your sign-in code is emailed, so the mail service handles the address it is sent to.

That request reaches the model through a routing service, which passes it to whichever company runs the model. The routing service always keeps the shape of a request — when it was made, which model, how many tokens — and the text of it only if we ask, which we do not. The company that answers may keep what was sent, or train on it, under its own policy. We do not promise otherwise, because that part is not ours to promise.

Dictation, only if you turn it on. Your browser's own speech engine transcribes what you say, which hands the audio to the maker of your browser. The strict-local setting runs the transcription inside the page instead, and then nothing you say leaves your device.

These companies are outside Australia, mostly in the United States, so your data is held and handled there.

Nobody else. Your archive is not shared, sold, or handed to anyone else, except where a law obliges us.

Photographs sit at unguessable addresses

A photograph you add is stored as a file whose address is a long random string. It is listed nowhere and linked nowhere.

Anyone holding that exact address can open it without signing in. Treat such a link as the secret it is.

Taking it with you, and deleting it

Export is a destination in the product, not a setting. The whole archive leaves as a zip of Markdown files, whenever you ask.

Deleting your account destroys everything at once: entries, books, photographs. There is no trash, no undo, and no copy we can return to you.

Using it

You must be old enough where you live to agree to terms like these.

Do not store material that is illegal to hold, and do not attack the service, overload it, or try to reach another person's archive. An account doing that can be closed.

What we do not promise

Byhand is offered as it is. We cannot promise it is reachable at every moment, or free of faults, and it may change.

Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. Export is there for exactly that.

Nothing here removes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be signed away.

Changes, law, and reaching us

These terms change when the product does. The date above says when they last did.
